Man Paralyzed After Rideshare Crash Suing Uber for $63 Million
A recent Uber crash reminds us all that rideshare accidents are unfortunately all too common. If you were injured in an Uber or Lyft accident, it is critical that you contact a skilled personal injury attorney now for you. You and your family deserve fair compensation for your injuries.
Accident Ends in Paralysis
The crash in question took place in Somerville, MA. Will Good, age 31, was riding in the back of an Uber in the early morning hours. He had just finished a 14-hour shift as a chef at a Boston restaurant.
Just blocks from his destination, the Uber driver slammed into a parked car. Good was thrown against a headrest and broke his neck. “There was a swerve, an accident, and I couldn’t move, so I thought I was crushed,” Good says.
Since the accident, he has filed a lawsuit against Uber and is asking for $63 million. The suit claims that Uber doesn’t effectively screen its drivers. According to Good, his particular Uber driver had a lengthy record of traffic violations and should have never been driving.
According to Good’s attorney, “Uber wants to entice passengers into the car and charge them when they get out of the car, but it doesn’t want to take responsibility for the safety of passengers who are in the car.”
Rideshare Accidents are Very Real
The case of Will Good is a sad reminder that rideshare accidents happen all the time. These accidents don’t only cause injuries, but they have led to fatalities as well. According to a study conducted by professors at the University of Chicago and Rice University, the launch of a ride-hailing platform like Lyft or Uber in a city is associated with a 2-3% increase in the number of fatal accidents and motor vehicle fatalities. This study translates to about another 1,000 fatalities per year.
There are many causes of rideshare car crashes. Some of these include Uber and Lyft drivers:
- Driving distractedly as they must keep track of the app on their phone,
- Working longer hours without adequate rest,
- Speeding to make more tips,
- Failing to obey traffic signals, signs, and rules of the road,
- Overdriving road conditions, and
- Driving with little experience.
